“Good! Now let’s get going, I’m late as it is already.” Jack walked up the long hill of stairs and in through the large doors of the lab. They entered into a tower like room, a large open space of cold, dark stone and a winding tower of stairs. He climbed the stairs effortlessly, though he kept a slow pace so she could keep up. All around on the walls were different things, portraits of scientists and some inventions behind glass. All of them looked rather rustic, some even quite terrifying such as his iron maiden that still had the skeleton inside. As they got closer to the top of the stairs, they could hear curses flowing down from above and loud bangs. Jack frowned a bit, realizing something must have happened. “God-Mother of-Darn-Stupid-!” Jack had only just placed his foot on the top stair when he was nearly hit by a test tube. He winced as he noticed the scattered papers and broken viles and gave a small gulp. “Doctor, I retrieved the surplies-“ “Forget it! The experiment is ruined!” The Doctor snarled, ripping up another page. Jack blinked at the Doctor’s display of anger and thought for a moment to apologize to Val. That was till of course he glanced over and saw just what the Doctor was so angry about. The dog, another new dead of only a few days before Val, had really died for good. The Doctor had been wanting to use it for his experiments on reanimating dead bodies but now that wouldn’t be possible. “All that work for nothing! And it was the perfect specimen too!” The Doctor’s head landed with a ‘thunk’ on the operating table and Jack gave a small huff of dismay. “We’ll get another Doctor. I’m sure the werewolves will dig up something eventually.” The Doctor let out a groan of annoyance and Jack cleared his throat, realizing he wasn’t helping. “In the meantime… I’d like to introduce you to someone.” Jack took a step back, placing Val between him and the Doctor. “This is Val, a new dead.” Jack said proudly. The Doctor sat up a bit, looking groggily from his glasses at her. He didn’t seem to give much care for her at first but suddenly his eyes brightened. He flipped his chair round and wheeled over to her, getting pretty close to the point he almost ran over her toes. “Interesting, what a fine specimen. So intact!” The Doctor said in observation of there not being any sign of rot on her or death to her at all. Jack nodded, his smile growing. “I found her in the cemetery. She wasn’t even buried.” The Doctor looked at Val and gave her an appraising grin. “Yes yes, very fine. Tell me dear, how did you die with such…well vigor? You kept your body in top condition, to unimaginable lengths even.”

She tripped up most of the stairs trying to keep up with Jack- who had very long legs. She would have liked him if he were alive- but he was very much dead. She tried her best not to look at the things on the walls- some of them looked sick and twisted others just grotesque. Listening to the curses coming down the stairs she figured it was her fault. Hesitating at the top of the twisted stairs she stood behind jack. She winced as well as the glass hit the wall and shattered- she wasn't used to having things thrown at her in greeting. She smiled faintly as he tried to comfort the doctor about the fail experiment, but freaked a little when his icy fingers grabbed her and pushed her towards the doctor. She wasn't sure she liked this at all. When she was introduced as a' new dead' she smiled a little. "Nice to meet you doctor."She felt uneasy when he got suddenly excited about her and almost ran over her toes, she took a quick hop back. She looked uneasy as he looked her over, she looked up at jack rather unsure about his. She smiled thinking of what to tell them- she didn't think about telling them about the demon she made a deal with because that could have been bad, but she did like telling the truth. "Well- It kinda just happened. I guess-I don't really remember." She said making it absolute but she was suddenly curious about what and who the doctor knew. "Doctor- do you by chance know of any one here that is well was burned at his death- perhaps a child? He was killed -well several hunderd years ago..."

The doctor looked kind of disappointed when she said she couldn't remember how she stayed so perfectly preserved. He flipped his chair round and began to wheel back to his table. "Seems like you and Jack are in the same boat there. Damn memory loss." He sighed, making a dismissing wave over his shoulder. Jack gave Val a small wink though it was hardly comforting. He would quell his curiousity for now about her death and at the moment would focus on what he could only guess was getting information about her brother. "He's just in a bad mood." He said softly, before raising his voice so that he could catch the Doctor's interest again. "Doctor, about the burned boy she asked about...?" "Burned boys? What do I look like an encyclopedia of dead people?!" He grumbled and Jack shook his head. "No...the book is taller than you are..." He muttered the last part before standing straighter. "Well Doctor, you see most of the severe cases, after all someone has to fix them up." Jack walked over to his chair, placing a firm grip on it. "Perhaps if you search that marvelous brain of yours, you might remember something, oui?" The Doctor gave a small sniff, letting jack turn his chair to face Val again. "Let's see...burned. Well there has to be over 300 burned. Depends on his type. You said boy. Well that narrows it down to about 150. That vampire case a month ago was pretty severe-" "I don't think he's vampire. Val isn't one." "Then the werewolf-I think he was burned on a stake-but that was-let's see......close to 300 years back." "But Doctor she said much farther than that-" "THEN you think of someone!" "I can't. You know perfectly well I don't remember how long its been since I've been here. Besides, I think that- oh what's his name- AH Bramah was still in charge then not the Mayor." "You mean Bramahamut. that brute? Yes yes, he dated back to the dark ages. This place wasn't nearly as organized then. Hell, I wasn't even around, but the witches say it was nasty good fun." Jack's eyes narrowed a bit. He was getting side tracked again. Before the Doctor could go into a long, conveluted story, Jack tapped his foot in thought. "Think...there must be someone that fits that description." "Unless he was cremated. But he wouldn't have been here unless something tragic happened." "Yes yes, we all know the dead that end up here died of rather unearthly or wretched causes but perhaps let's say it was maybe a house fire?""By several hundred years ago and no ones heard of the kid?! Hell, he's probably a spirit by now." Jack wanted to quickly silence the Doctor before Val heard that. A known fact here was that the spirits were a class all their own. They were ready to 'pass over' in a sense, but were still tormented by whatever held them to Halloween Town. It made them very volatile and dangerous, even for the dead. They were left alone and hard to communicate with. If her brother was a spirit, she might not ever find him. Jack didn't want to think that way so him and the Doctor kept babbling on about the different things. "Val-what's his name?" Jack finally asked and the Doctor glared at her. "A name would be beneficial!"

Val listened tot hem mutter back and forth for a bit then started zoning out when he kept getting farther and farther away from her brother's description. However she as brought back to the day in her mind where her little brother was playing knights by her int eh attic, her candles glistening lightly on the edge of her mind. "A name would be beneficial!" Was what the doctor said- it bringing her mind to the current. She looked up at the doctor, her eyes wide. "Liam- Liam was his name...He wasn't burned at the stake- he fell into my spelling circle..." She said in a quiet voice, not really caring if they figured she was a witch or not but she just wanted to get out of her now. She felt so lonely and isolated- being the only living thing here. She pulled her almost helpless eyes to Jack's sockets- where she half imagined pale blue eyes- she liked to think of his as a tall man with pretty eyes to match his pretty soul.

“Spell circle?” The two chimed in unison, obviously shocked by that. They stared at Val before looking to each other. “Sounds about right.” “Traumatic enough to keep someone here.” “Magic. Never leads to anything good. Science is so much more beneficial.” The Doctor said and gave Val a leery look. Witches were a different case, like the spirits. When living, they communicated a lot with the dimensional flow and often even came in contact with the world of death. It was a complex balance that took a lot of responsibility for a person. But that wasn’t the issue there. Jack even knew that. This couldn’t be just another witch communicating with the spirit world. She wouldn’t have been able to physically manifest here without the help of the key to the gateway between the world of living and the dead. Besides, Val didn’t seem like the type to purposefully meddle with forces she couldn’t control, such as her brother being just a casualty to mistake. “Anyways. Liam doesn’t ring a bell.” The Doctor began to speak about different things going on and how remembering all the names of the people he met wasn’t as important as what that person contributed. Jack stared at Val, taking in her appearance silently for a moment. He knew by the look in her eyes she cared for her brother and that was all she was holding onto. If he could help her...perhaps that strange look would fade from her eyes. “I told her about the book at the Mayors office. The one with all the records of every person here. I was thinking of asking to take a look at it.” He said to the Doctor who scoffed. “Yeah, if you can make the man sit still enough to let you look at it! The mans a mess with all this preparation for Halloween and the Pumpkin King crowning. So much to get done before then.” Jack nodded not really caring much for the talks of Halloween. It brought back that same bitterness that he just wasn’t able to enjoy the holiday. Besides, Jack was a bit more interested in just what Val was since she was so different. She was most likely a witch, but dead?....perhaps....He shook off the thought. “Val, would you like a seat? You’ve been standing for a while it seems. Let me finish up here and then we’ll go look into getting you a peek at that book.” He said, trying for a smile.

"Oh, thanks jak" Was all she could really figure out to say, she as upset now that her brother was missing still. She was loosing time now. reaching in her bag she pulled out a vial and swallowed it when the doctor wasn't looking, she didn't care if jack saw but she did. Replacing the vial she sighed. "I-I hope that book can tell me where my brother is...I miss him..." She simply sat there an almost dull look on her pretty face as she thought of the horrible torrents her brother must have gone threw down here.

Jack gave Val a small look of worry. She sounded off, most likely burdened by her brother still missing. He started getting to work again, picking up the mess that the Doctor had left. He glanced up in time, with arms full of papers, to see Val down some sort of vile of red liquid. It made him grimace and wonder just what it was. While he was getting to the scattered glass, he heard what she said. It struck a cord with him, an odd feeling that made him feel almost...bad for her? He looked to her then back at the Doctor. He seemed to be occupied with a new blue print. He moved over to Val, kneeling down to her level. As he picked up a bit more of the papers. “I’m sure you do Val...And it’s very good to hope for something, but remember it isn’t the only place to look. There are many more!” He didn’t quite think that one through, and just how it might communicate to her. He instead stood straight up, worrying over the papers and books that were totally trashed. “Such mal-treatment of these books. You’d think a man of science would care more. But he has nothing compared to my library.” He placed the book delicately on the shelf before looking to Val with a bright smile. “So, tell me something about yourself Val. Anything you like. I feel it helps to take the stress off of things to talk about things you like.” He said, hoping at least draw a bit more of that strange color to her face. It was intriguing to see someone with skin so peachy.

She looked up at jack when he began talking about his library, it seemed he liked to read things- like learning new things. Just like her little brother did, that brought a small smile to her face. "I like to make things with my hands. With my magic- I like to mold fire like I did for my brother when I was young...Would you like to see?" She asked as she reached a red gloved hand into her blouse pulling out a small metal staff, however she held it between her thumb and index finger till it grew to about shoulder height on her- she clinked it on the floor. Holding it with one hand now she let a small smile slip onto her lips. Her brother had always liked her staff- he liked to fight with her via a wooden sword to practice. She enjoyed the sparing to get her self more particular with it. She glanced at the fire and the back at Jack- it was a cool trick and she loved doing it- she could show a person a whole story if she put her mind to it. "Also, When can we go see to this book?" She asked in a more focused almost bold voice as he had refocused her nerves.

Jack's curiousity was peeked at her mention of her magic and he gave her a nod when she offered to show it. He moved away from the shelf when she suddenly pulled out a small rod from her blouse and he grimaced a bit in confusion. Then suddenly the pole grew taller till finally it touched the ground. He jumped a bit at the fire but his shock quickly changed to pure curiousity. Like a kid in a candy shop he leaned close to the fire. He cocked his head to the side a bit, noticing the color and shape and vivid light. However it didn't let off anything, not even a sense to him. He reached out to it and poked it. Someone with skin and nerves would probably pull their hand away because it hurt. But Jack simply pulled his hand away because the tip of the bone had a black soot form on it. He wiped it off but felt nothing. Soot meant heat, he read some where that fire should be hot...but what was hot exactly? He tried to feel something but all he felt was nothing. It drove his curiousity, bothered him so, he almost didn't hear Val in all of his thoughts. "Hm, yes..." He said, still entranced by the fire till suddenly something in his mind seemed to bring him back to reality. "Yes, well, we could go now, unless you've had your fill for today? I suggest resting soon though. It will be light soon and no one likes mornings after all. Everyone will be asleep and you should really see this place in the dead of night." He gave a small laugh to the word, loving the little pun.

"I guess resting might be nice, I can always take the time to practice...or something...thanks Jack." She said with a soft smile. She was glad she had found a friendly person well- thing down here. She wasn't to excited to see this place at night but she figured might as well act dead if every one thought you were. However her mind was suddenly brought back to a recent encounter- and a subject. A key- she saw a big key hanging around this skeleton's neck- was this the character that she heard about with the key to her freedom?"Hey, Jack- that- umm... can I ask you something?" She decided that a direct question wasn't the best.

Jack was glad Val wasn't in such a hurry to run off to the book. The poor girl had suffered enough trauma for the day and should take a breather to gain her wits before she went back into a hope that may or may not be fruitfull. For her sake he hoped it was. She was a very sweet girl but he could sense the weakness that still lay deep in her heart for her brother. It wasn't a wound to the heart that was easy to cure or get over quickly. It'd probably be years after her death that she would accept the possibility of not finiding him. Jack noticed her looking at him and when she asked to ask something, gave her a small smile. "Sure, I don't see why not." He said and gave her a wink. "As long as I can ask a few myself later on." He said. He told the Doctor he must leave and walked with Val down the winding stares and out into the open morning air. It was a foggy white sky and all around them things seemed almost a bit more docile and normal looking. He looked over at Val wanting to pass the time a little. "I was thinking of allowing you to stay the first morning with me. Just till we can get you settled in a new residence later." He said before clearing his throat when he realized he was getting off track. "Now, what was it you wanted to ask me.

She nodded a smile on her face," Well I was wondering about that key around your neck, what sit for?" She asked her voice innocent of any knowledge at all. Looking about she made it seem like she was simply curious and not eager to know like she was dying to know inside. "It looks almost dreary here...In the light any how..." the fog only made it slick and sickly feeling and looking, she didn't like this at all.

Jack touched the key around his neck and instantly his demeanor changed. He looked almost uncomfortable. "Well-its important for...a door around here." He said and let the topic drop. He wasn't suposed to tell people about it, since the key was a well kept secret amoungst a select few in Halloween. It controlled the doorway between this world and the one one of the living. It would be disasterous if it ended up in the wrong hands. That's what the person that gave it to him said and Jack knew to believe it. He looked around him and smiled slighlty at the fog and dreary look the town had taken on. "Well, it's not exactly lively, but it has a certain charm. You get used to it after you haven't seen sunlight for a couple decades." He said and gave her the slightest of looks. It still amazed him how she could still look like she had just stepped out of sun, her skin a living ivory color instead of pale. He remembered what she said about magic and wondered if perhaps she had used magic in her death...or perhaps...he shook his head. That wasn't possible. No living person could get into his world without his help or that of very powerful means..... His mind got to working on trying to wrap around that idea. It was impossible but....not improbable. He cleared his throat when he noticed they were in the Town Square. "This is the center of town. To your right is town halll, to your left is the path to the grave yard and pumpkin patch. behind us leads to the forest and the Doctor's lab, and ahead is the residential area. I stay just on the outskirts of there." He told her as they walked along the street. He knew he hadn't exactly been fair about dismissing her question after he had told her to ask anything and he gave her a half smile. "Anything else you'd like to know...?"
